Shi\u00adhan Michel\u00adle Gay\u2019s Dojo, KEN-WA-KAN Kara\u00adte Do, is an off\u00adshoot from world-Oya\u00adma-full-cont\u00adact-kara\u00adte. Last but not least, I beca\u00adme fri\u00adends with J\u00fcr\u00adgen H\u00f6l\u00adler, a prac\u00adti\u00adtio\u00adner of Ashi\u00adha\u00adra-full cont\u00adact kara\u00adte for around fif\u00adty-years. The\u00adse trai\u00adning expe\u00adri\u00aden\u00adces have been very influ\u00aden\u00adti\u00adal on the way I view the dif\u00adfe\u00adrent levels or are\u00adas in kara\u00adte: jod\u00adan, chu\u00addan and gedan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Vir\u00adtual\u00adly every kara\u00adte\u00adka has heard of the\u00adse clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons, and most are awa\u00adre what they mean. Typi\u00adcal\u00adly, we think of jod\u00adan for neck and head, chu\u00addan for should\u00aders to pubic-bone, and gedan for the legs and gro\u00adin. Let\u2019s now take a clo\u00adser look at the\u00adse three terms. When explo\u00adring the\u00adse terms, I asked mys\u00adelf seve\u00adral ques\u00adti\u00adons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Are we real\u00adly tal\u00adking about heights?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Why were the\u00adse are\u00adas crea\u00adted and why do we use them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Should we view them from defen\u00adsi\u00adve or offen\u00adsi\u00adve point of view?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Are they tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly or do they ori\u00adgi\u00adna\u00adte is modern sport kara\u00adte?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Whe\u00adre are the demar\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons bet\u00adween them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\u2022&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Can we bet\u00adter descri\u00adbe and use the\u00adse clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Exami\u00adning the sources, I found two main ways of loo\u00adking at the levels. First\u00adly, the\u00adre are pic\u00adtures with lines on a stan\u00adding body to divi\u00adde the heights. Second\u00adly, the\u00adre are texts to explain which part of the ana\u00adto\u00admy are included in each level. Bey\u00adond that, we don\u2019t have a gre\u00adat deal to go off, so it initi\u00adal\u00adly seems that defi\u00adni\u00adti\u00adve ans\u00adwers may be hard to come by. Howe\u00adver, I think we need to look bey\u00adond the sur\u00adface and exami\u00adne things more deep\u00adly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jod\u00adan (\u4e0a\u6bb5) means \u201chigh-level\u201d, chu\u00addan (\u4e2d\u6bb5) means \u201cmidd\u00adle-level\u201d and gedan (\u4e0b\u6bb5) means \u201clow-level\u201d. This would seem obvious when appli\u00aded to a stan\u00adding body, but they can also be appli\u00aded to a fal\u00adling or pro\u00adne body. The\u00adse clas\u00adsi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adons are the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre best seen, not as heights from the flo\u00ador, but as desi\u00adgna\u00adted are\u00adas on the body. We can view the\u00adse desi\u00adgna\u00adti\u00adons from both an offen\u00adsi\u00adve and defen\u00adsi\u00adve per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">From an offen\u00adsi\u00adve per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve, the ter\u00admi\u00adno\u00adlo\u00adgy around the three levels can make things easier for ever\u00adyo\u00adne; stu\u00addents and tea\u00adcher. We can sim\u00adply say \u201cjod\u00adan elbow\u201d ins\u00adtead of \u201celbow strike to the head\u201d. We can say, \u201cstrike chu\u00addan\u201d ins\u00adtead of \u201cdeli\u00adver a strike to the sto\u00admach\u201d. We can say, \u201ckick gedan\u201d ins\u00adtead of \u201cdeli\u00adver an attack a leg\u201d. Howe\u00adver, such ins\u00adtruc\u00adtions lack pre\u00adcis\u00adi\u00adon and don\u2019t com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adte the spe\u00adci\u00adfic ana\u00adto\u00admic\u00adal tar\u00adgets or how to best attack them. This is important infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon and hence the vague natu\u00adre of the terms is poten\u00adti\u00adal\u00adly pro\u00adble\u00adma\u00adtic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">From a defen\u00adsi\u00adve per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve, the vague natu\u00adre of the terms can be seen as a posi\u00adti\u00adve. You don\u2019t neces\u00ads\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly need to have know\u00adledge of the pre\u00adcise tech\u00adni\u00adque coming at you in order to stop it. It can be enough to defend a cer\u00adtain area. It would the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre seem the terms have more value defen\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly. Howe\u00adver, it seems odd to me that the terms are still appli\u00aded to offen\u00adsi\u00adve tech\u00adni\u00adques.&nbsp; Sure\u00adly, their wide\u00adspread use that way would sug\u00adgest they must have some value offen\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly; bey\u00adond simp\u00adle con\u00adve\u00adni\u00adence in trai\u00adning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">From a modern com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adve per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve, the levels are used pro\u00adhi\u00adbit cer\u00adtain attacks and to desi\u00adgna\u00adte the num\u00adber of points award\u00aded for others. This is of litt\u00adle con\u00adcern with regards to this artic\u00adle, becau\u00adse we are con\u00adside\u00adring things from a tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal and com\u00adba\u00adti\u00adve per\u00adspec\u00adti\u00adve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">As a prac\u00adti\u00adcal mar\u00adti\u00adal artist, who has always trai\u00adned with a degree of cont\u00adact, I have been able to obser\u00adve how the enemy\u2019s body reacts after any given strike. Tho\u00adse like me will be awa\u00adre that after cont\u00adact the part\u00adner usual\u00adly leans back\u00adward, for\u00adwards or side\u00adways. I think the three levels can be very hel\u00adpful in deter\u00admi\u00adning what the most likely reac\u00adtion will be; and hence what the most appro\u00adpria\u00adte fol\u00adlow up attack will be. This is whe\u00adre we find their offen\u00adsi\u00adve value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I belie\u00adve the\u00adre is an important line, which isn\u2019t include on the dra\u00adwings that typi\u00adcal\u00adly show the three levels. This the line from elbow to elbow; just abo\u00adve the solar ple\u00adxus. This line divi\u00addes the body in such a way we can pre\u00addict the enemy\u2019s reac\u00adtion after impact. If one was hit abo\u00adve this line, his body will lean back\u00adwards. As a result, the abdo\u00admi\u00adnal mus\u00adcles will be stret\u00adched, and the geni\u00adtals will be vul\u00adnerable to attack. If one is hit below this line, his head will come for\u00adward and his arms will be posi\u00adtio\u00adned in front of his sto\u00admach and chest. Addi\u00adtio\u00adnal\u00adly, he will bend at the waist such that his backside will move back\u00adward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When we have con\u00adside\u00adred this, prac\u00adti\u00adcal kara\u00adte\u00adka can best defi\u00adne the levels as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jod\u00adan is abo\u00adve the elbow-line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chu\u00addan is the lower tor\u00adso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gedan is the geni\u00adtals and lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">To make use of the levels offen\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly, we know that if we want the ene\u00admy to lean back\u00adward, then strike jod\u00adan. Con\u00adver\u00adse\u00adly, if you want the enemy\u2019s head to come for\u00adward, then attack chu\u00addan. The terms the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre have offen\u00adsi\u00adve com\u00adba\u00adti\u00adve value in deter\u00admi\u00adning the enemy\u2019s reac\u00adtion to impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Defen\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly, the\u00adre are also advan\u00adta\u00adges to divi\u00adding the body this way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Jod\u00adan is this area you can pro\u00adtect with your arms alo\u00adne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Chu\u00addan is the area you can pro\u00adtect with your legs and arms<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Gedan is the area you pro\u00adtect with your legs alo\u00adne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">By moving the jod\u00adan line down from the neck to the elbows, the three levels have both offen\u00adsi\u00adve and defen\u00adsi\u00adve value.
